4K and 1080p describe image resolution. A typical 4K UHD frame has 3840 × 2160 pixels, while 1080p has 1920 × 1080. That gives 4K four times as many pixels in the frame, but not four times the certainty that a recording will identify something.
When more detail helps
If cameras cover the same view with appropriate lenses and settings, a higher-resolution recording can preserve more detail for review. That may help when examining a smaller part of a wider image. The original recording needs to contain that detail; enlarging an already blurred or overexposed image cannot recover information that was never captured.
Position and lens choice still come first
A camera covering a whole yard gives each distant subject a small part of the image. A closer view at a gate may be more useful for a specific purpose. Mounting very high can also give an unhelpful angle. Discuss the required result before selecting resolution and camera count.
Night footage and moving subjects
Available light, exposure, lens and sensor characteristics all affect the recording. A static night view can look clear while a moving person becomes blurred. Infrared reflections, dirty covers and nearby walls can also spoil the picture. Compare actual operating conditions rather than assuming the higher-resolution model will perform better in every situation.
Bandwidth, recording and storage
4K often uses a higher bitrate for useful image quality, but there is no fixed multiplier for storage. Compression, scene complexity, frame rate and quality settings change the amount of data. Check the recorder's supported resolution, incoming bandwidth and playback capabilities as well as its number of channels.

A mixed system can be sensible
