CCTV Camera Offline: Checks Before a Fault Visit

Trace a missing CCTV camera through local live view, power, PoE and cabling. Practical checks before arranging an engineer.

Is one camera missing, or the whole system?

Check the local recorder monitor if you have access. If all views are available there but missing on your phone, follow the app connection guide. If one view is missing locally, note its channel name and error message. If several are missing, look for a shared switch or power supply.

Check accessible power and connections

Confirm the recorder and any separate PoE switch are powered. Inspect accessible Ethernet plugs for a loose connection and look for a link light where the equipment provides one. A link light indicates a connection, not proof of a healthy video stream. Check whether a power cut, building work or router replacement preceded the fault.

Isolate one part at a time

An authorised person familiar with the system can test an accessible camera using a known working, compatible PoE port and short cable. Label connections and record their original positions first. Do not move every cable at once or use an unverified power adapter. If the fault follows the cable route rather than the camera, the route or termination needs inspection.

Check the recorder's camera status

An incorrect password, duplicated IP address or changed subnet can appear as an offline camera. Record the status shown in the camera-management screen. Avoid factory resets: they can remove the settings needed to reconnect the camera. Do not climb to a camera or open mains-powered equipment for these checks.

When to arrange a visit

Repeated dropouts, water in connectors, a damaged cable or an uncertain PoE power budget need investigation. Note whether the fault occurs only at night, when lighting can increase power demand. Send the camera and recorder models with your findings.

Still having problems?

Sentinel5 can inspect the system. Book CCTV Fault Support or read about our CCTV repair service. Include the model and symptoms, but never passwords or private footage.
