Write down the offset first
Compare the recorder clock with a trusted current clock and note the difference, including the date and time zone. Existing recordings may be indexed under the incorrect time. If footage is needed for an incident, record the offset before making changes so it can be explained when exporting.
Check the time zone and daylight saving
A clock exactly one hour out often points to a daylight-saving or time-zone setting, but confirm rather than assume. Use the UK time-zone option and supported automatic daylight-saving settings in the documentation for your model. Check both the recorder and any independently configured cameras.
Check network time synchronisation
If the equipment supports NTP, verify its configured server, network access and synchronisation status. An incorrect gateway or DNS setting can prevent synchronisation. Use an approved time source for the network; do not weaken firewall policy as a first response.
Make a controlled correction
Arrange changes at a known time and document them. Moving the clock backwards can create overlapping timestamps or confusing playback indexes on some systems. Follow the recorder's instructions and preserve relevant footage first. Check the on-screen camera overlay as well as the playback timeline.
Confirm the time stays correct
Check again later and after the next daylight-saving transition. A clock that resets after power loss may indicate a hardware issue requiring service. Export a short sample and confirm its time with the required player. If playback remains confusing, follow NVR recording checks.
